In the world of barbecue, champion pitmaster Mike Mills is affectionately known as “The Legend.” He presides over the pits at his two nationally acclaimed 17th Street Barbecue barbecue restaurants in Southern Illinois.
In the early 1990s, he was co-captain of the Apple City Barbecue team, one of the most celebrated teams ever on the circuit. He is a four-time World Champion and three-time Grand World Champion at Memphis in May, otherwise known as the Super Bowl of Swine. He is also the 1992 Grand Champion of the Jack Daniel’s World Invitational Barbecue Cooking Contest and he won the Jack Daniel’s Sauce Contest that year as well.
Mike is the barbecue guru at and a partner in Blue Smoke restaurant in New York City. He was a founding partner in Memphis Championship Barbecue in Las Vegas. His book, Peace, Love, and Barbecue was nominated for a 2006 James Beard Foundation award and received the 2006 National Barbecue Association Award of Excellence. In October 2008 he was honored with the Pioneer of Barbecue award at the Jack Daniel’s World Invitational Barbecue Cooking Contest. Mike was inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2010.
Barbecue heiress Amy Mills, daughter of barbecue legend Mike Mills, is considered the industry’s go-to girl for all things barbecue. She is the James Beard Award-nominated author of Peace, Love and Barbecue, a television personality, and a branding, marketing and PR pro. Her company, OnCue Consulting, offers premiere barbecue industry education and she consults with restaurants and barbecuers world-wide.

Wow! Appetizer, fried pickles came in a metal tin. Enough to feed 6 people! I highly recommend the turkey sandwich. It was served on buttered Texas toast. So good. I normally wouldn’t eat the bread, but the combination of flavors was delightfully delicious.1

Stopped by for some food to go on our way from Ohio to Texas. Awesome service, super quick! Pork sandwich was amazing and the coleslaw was some of the best I have ever had. If we’re ever in the area, we will make it a point to stop by again!1

I always get The Reuben. It has a slight twist to it than one you’d buy from a deli. I also like their fried okra which you don’t always see as a side item in a lot of restaurants. My daughters love their BBQ Pork sandwiches. 17th Street never disappoints!Like

The BBQ and sides were pretty good. I got the 2 meat combo that comes with 2 sides for $19. The brisket was tender and the ribs were tasty. I enjoyed the green beans and the mac and cheese. The elotes corn bites were better than expected. There are 5 pieces for $3. Pint of All day IPA is $5.1

We ordered fried pickles and a large platter to split. Both orders were huge portions and delicious. The BBQ sauce is good and vinegar-y. The only complaint is that the garlic bread order was a little small to call 6 pieces. But, it didn’t matter with all the other food we had. So still a win.Like

Passing through heard the ribs were good so decided to try. Didn’t get to eat them til about 8 hours later..reheated in oven and were still the best ribs I’ve eaten from a restaurant. Next time through gonna try the brisket.Like

I love the atmosphere (always having the right things on for sports helps of course ). Today I stopped in for a quick bite and the food was in front of me in almost seconds. More than that, it was hot and exactly what I had expected from them for taste. They never disappoint!1
